Many people rely on their garage doors frequently, as they use them everyday to leave for work and come home afterward. This means that once it breaks, it is a big inconvenience. In the best case, it breaks and you have to manually open and close it until you can get professional garage door repair, or get time to do it on your own. In the worst case, however, you may be stuck inside or outside the area until it begins working again. Find out how to solve this issue from start to finish.

If you are stuck because the covering will not open, you have an option. You should simply pull the emergency release, which is a cord that hangs down from the opener itself. It is usually red so that it is easily visible. Pulling this release will make it possible to manually open and close the covering until you can get someone to your house to perform garage door repair.

Once you have solved the issue of getting in and out, and perhaps gotten the issue fixed, you might wonder how to reconnect the emergency shutoff cord. It is necessary to do so in order to start using the item again electrically after it has been repaired. If a repair person fixed the original issue, he or she should reconnect the release before leaving your house. If you made the repairs yourself, you will now be faced with reconnecting the cord. Fortunately, this is something most people can do on their own.

You should first press the main button to run the door electrically as normal. As it opens, you need to observe where the cord makes contact with the opener chain. You will likely see a very small aperture where the lock needs to snap in once again, so you should push it in when the cord and the opener chain line up correctly. You should then open or close the door once again to make sure it works right after the garage door repair is finished.

You might not think to reconnect the emergency release once it has been pulled, but it is important to do so in case the opener breaks again. This could be sometime far in the future, and if you simply forget to reconnect it, there will likely be no way to open or shut your covering manually. You will be glad you learned how to do this procedure when the main opener mechanism breaks once again, so it is best to get it done now.
