How to Pack Breakables for a Move

Moving to a new place is often an exciting idea, full of hope for a fresh start. While packing is a task that falls far short of thrilling, it is important to know how to pack anything you own that is breakable to make sure you can enjoy those items as much in your brand new place as you did in your old one. Basically you have two choices now - you can hire a moving company to pack all your possessions for you, or you can follow the tips that follow.

First, you'll need the right materials for packing. You'll want to use extra strong, sturdy boxes to protect your breakables. Dish barrel boxes, as their name implies, are designed for moving dishes safely, but they are also excellent for protecting other delicate items. However, any strong cardboard box will do. Of course, you'll also need packing peanuts, pillows, bubble wrap, newspaper and/or other materials to wrap and cushion your breakables.

Be careful not to overfill boxes with heavy items. Boxes that are too heavy are difficult to carry and also may break under the strain. It's better to pack less in each box, and fill out the remainder of the space with packing materials to keep the items in place and the box solid. Once the bottom of the box is lined with packaging material as a cushion, you'll be ready to begin.

Each breakable item should be wrapped individually in newspaper or paper that is sold in bundles by moving companies. Line the bottom of the box with packaging materials. Dishes should be gently stacked in the box one at a time. Of course, you'll want the heaviest items on the bottom for maximum stability and least chance of breakage. Fill in the sides around the dishes with packing material to cushion and stabilize.

For packaging cups, vases, or other hollow pieces, fill the item with cushioning, then wrap it thoroughly. Be sure to cushion these and smaller breakables well. Styrofoam peanuts are an excellent choice for filler, particularly in boxes with smaller items. Breakables that are particularly light in weight should be packed with extra care, as their lightness can cause the box and its contents to shift easily. The best thing to do for these items is to make sure the box has plenty of filler to weigh it down and keep the items within stationary.

While nearly every moving how-to list will tell you that labeling is important, it's worth saying again. Putting items together according to their types or the rooms they belong in, and labeling them clearly, will save you a lot of time and worry after your move is complete. In the case of breakables, you'll also want to make sure the box says "Fragile" on more than one side to avoid mishandling it later.

If all this sounds like too much work, you can always hire a moving company to help. They can handle all the packing for you, or you can relegate just part of the packing, like valuables and breakables, to them. Another advantage of using a professional mover is that you can insure valuables against damage or breakage during the move. Letting the professionals do the job is the easiest way to make certain your most precious belongings will arrive at your new home safely.
