What To Do About Writer's Block

Writer's block is no doubt the most debilitating of problems faced by any writer. But the good news is that it is permanently curable.

The drying up of ideas and creativity is something that happens to just about every writer at some point. Whatever writing you habitually engage in - novel writing, report writing, salesletter writing or writing articles for your blog - you can be hit by writer's block.

At its simplest, writer's block is basically just running out of ideas. Creative thought seems to be entirely absent. What you mustn't do when this happens is get frustrated. You aren't the first writer this has happened to and you won't be the last.

What you really should do at this point is take a break from writing. Get up and stretch your legs, make a drink, go for a walk or just do something, anything, that isn't writing. Try not to think about what you're writing - this is vitally important - just think about something else entirely.

After taking this sort of break you'll often find that to your surprise, when you get back to your writing task, an idea will pop into your head which will take your writing in the direction it needs to go.

How long a break you'll need to achieve this will depend. Ideally only a short break will do the trick, but sometimes a day or more will be needed.

Just sleeping on it can be a solution. Go to sleep thinking about the writing you are doing and you'll often be surprised at the ideas you'll have the following day.

You should also keep a notebook on the bedside table because you'll often find that you get some great ideas in the middle of the night that will be only an incomplete memory if you leave it to the next morning before trying to remember them.

You'll also experience a second type of writer's block caused by life just getting in the way. Things will just crop up in your daily life that just have to be dealt with and that occupy so much of your thinking time that you find it hard to think of anything else. And this includes all thoughts connected with your writing. You'll find that however much you may want or need to, you just cannot concentrate on the writing task at hand.

One way around this is to get into the habit of writing something daily. The very act of writing can become engrained as a habit if you do it regularly. Don't worry about what to write when you engage in this as a daily exercise. Just putting words down on paper is all you're doing.

Getting into the habit so that writing becomes as much a part of what you do as breathing is what you're trying to achieve with this. Whatever it is you're thinking can then become just grist to the mill - if you're thinking, and we all are all of the time - then just get into the habit of putting your thoughts down on paper. You'll be amazed at what you learn about yourself just from this simple act. And you'll probably find that this alone will turn your writing in directions you just never would've imagined.

The more writing you do, preferably on a daily basis, the more a normal part of your life writing will become.

Once writing becomes a habit that is perfectly natural for you to indulge in, the less likely you are to suffer from writer's block.

The important thing is not to beat yourself up if writer's block strikes - remember it's probably even happened to your own favorite writers at some point in their careers. They've overcome it and so can you.

The key is to get into the habit of writing as a daily activity - this will deal with the average level of block. And for the block that will still crop up from time to time - take that break.

Empty you head of all thoughts about what you're supposed to be writing and just think about/do something completely different. You'll usually find that just an hour or two of this will be all it takes for you to come back to your writing refreshed and in a more creative frame of mind. If that doesn't have the desired effect, then make it an overnighter.

Sleep on it. Go to bed thinking about what it is you need to write and note down any ideas that come to mind either during the night or immediately upon waking. Get into the habit of doing this and you'll find that debilitating writer's block will become a thing of the past leaving only temporary, short term episodes for you to easily deal with.
